Overview

The Adak is a World War II Army Harbor tug transformed into 2000 square feet of snug living space featured on Airbnb and VRBO. Built by Clyde W. Wood (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clyde_W._Wood), the TP (Tug/Passenger) still uses the original 1928 Fairbanks-Morse six-cylinder direct-reversible diesel engine, constructed in Ohio. Today the tug functions as a vacation rental in Alaska's summer tourist season, and a monthly rental for Sitka Americorps volunteers in the off-season.

Descriptions

In addition to the Captain’s Quarters with ensuite head with shower (queen bed and double futon couch), the Adak has 3 additional small berths that have one shared head with shower - the "Engineer’s Quarters" (single), "First Mate’s Quarters" (single) and the "Brig" with ensuite sink (double). The period galley on the Adak is outfitted with a Monarch cast-iron wood-burning cookstove, freshwater sink, gas stove, range oven, and full-sized refrigerator with mini-fridge topside. A Whirlpool Thin-Twin washer/dryer is also aboard.

Lighting is 110-volt. Heating is provided by two wood stoves, separate 110-volt cadet units in each cabin, and a Fujitsu Halcyon heat pump. 30 KW Deutz Air Diesel with a GE A.C. generator end. Navien on-demand propane water heater rated @ 265 gallons per hour. New type II MSD blackwater system recently installed.

The Adak was sailed from Sitka to Wrangell Alaska in the fall of 2022 for haul out, refit, and fresh bottom paint. In 2016, the boat's previous owner wrote about their voyage to Wrangell and it was published in Smithsonian Magazine. Click on the link below to read all about it.
